Rise in child-sex arrests

The number of child sex offenders arrested has trebled over the last year, according to the organisation set up to deal with the problem.
Almost 300 suspects have been detained in the last 12 months by officers from the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre.
The organisation say that 131 children have been protected from further abuse and that 25 of the UK’s highest risk child sex offenders have been located.
Detectives have also infiltrated and dismantled six paedophile rings, which all had international connections outside the UK, and identified 18 child victims from indecent images.
The centre has received 5,812 reports of abuse in the 12 months from last April, a 76 per cent increase from last year.
It has also seen its number of arrests triple in that period.
Jim Gamble, CEOP Centre Chief Executive, said: “By us all working together 131 children are now safeguarded from some of the worst abuse imaginable - that is true impact. So I hope offenders take note. Look at the ways in which together we are infiltrating your worlds, understanding your minds in order to limit deviant behaviour and I hope you think again.
“If you are abusing children then we, through applying collaborative skills, working with local and international forces, harnessing the commitment from all sectors, will track you down.”
Ceop was set up in April 2006 to help track some of the UK’s highest risk sex offenders and protect children from sexual abuse.
